Previously… Anne spent the evening working in the bustling convent kitchen, trying to distract herself from the growing anxiety over her future. She had always assumed she would marry someone familiar, but her father’s unexpected news had shattered that assumption—Sir Ingram, a knight, had expressed interest in her. Though her mother was thrilled, Anne felt only dread. She struggled to imagine a life as the wife of a nobleman she barely knew, and the uncertainty made her stomach churn. As she pounded her dough with mounting frustration, she realised that waiting for his arrival was almost worse than the proposal itself.
Chapter 6
Anne had just finished sipping the tea, delivered with great ceremony by three of the kitchen women, when she spotted her father making his way over. She took a deep breath and schooled her face into what she hoped was a relaxed smile. The tea had been no use at all in calming her nerves.
