Previously… Anne braced herself as her father approached, knowing that the moment she had been dreading was finally here. Despite sipping the calming tea prepared for her, her nerves remained frayed. Nick assured her that she wouldn’t face Sir Ingram alone—Sister Mary Constance would be her chaperone. Though surprised by the choice, Anne understood her father’s reasoning. The formidable nun was respected and impartial, making her the perfect escort. As they waited, the kitchen fell silent at the sound of approaching horses. Nick barked at the staff to resume their work, but Anne remained frozen, her heart pounding as she prepared to meet her possible future husband.
Chapter 7
A man stepped inside, stopped to take off his cap, smoothed his hair, and looked around. He stood a good head taller than the other men present. His embroidered tunic was a bit mud-spattered from his ride but still beautiful, and his cloak, slung back over one shoulder, was deep green with an embroidered edge.
